A report released by CPT-Aegean Migrant Solidarity documents the deaths of migrants in Moria’s Reception and Identification Centre between 2016 and 2020 in Lesvos, Greece.

Since July 2023, the Aegean islands have experienced a sharp increase in arriving asylum seekers crossing by boat from Türkiye. Between 1 July – 31 August 2023, over 4,000 people were brought to the Closed Controlled Access Centres (CCACs) on Samos and Lesvos and placed into unlawful detention while awaiting registration of their asylum requests.

Εκφράζουμε τη βαθιά οδύνη μας για τον θάνατο εκατοντάδων συνανθρώπων μας στο ναυάγιο στα ανοιχτά της Πύλου την 14η Ιουνίου του 2023 και δηλώνουμε την αλληλεγγύη μας στις οικογένειες, τους οικείους τους, αλλά και στα επιζώντα θύματα. Ως Εναλλακτική Παρέμβαση – Δικηγορική Ανατροπή βρεθήκαμε από την πρώτη στιγμή στο δρόμο, συμμετέχοντας με μπλοκ στη μεγάλη διαδήλωση διαμαρτυρίας της 15ης Ιουνίου στην Αθήνα. Το πολύνεκρο αυτό ναυάγιο είναι το μεγαλύτερο κρατικό έγκλημα στα σύνορα του ελληνικού κράτους.

Joint Press Release: UNHCR and IOM call for coordinated action and safe pathways

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) expresses serious concerns over the continuous deterioration of the situation for migrants and refugees on the Greek island of Lesbos, where there have been numerous allegations/reports of exposure to violence, such as abductions and pushbacks, detention and deprivation of food and shelter. MSF calls on Greek authorities to investigate reports of hundreds of missing migrants – assumed to be forcibly pushed back to sea – and to implement safe and dignified reception conditions for those who remain on the island.

Since 2015, with the increased arrivals of boats coming from Turkey to Greece, thousands of people have faced charges, and people accused or convicted of human smuggling now make up the second largest prison population in Greece. The prosecution of A.B. is unfortunately not unique, as the targeting of migrants as smugglers has become a part of migration management in Greece, and throughout Europe.

The Greek National Commission for Human Rights (GNCHR) as the National Human Rights Institution in Greece (NHRI) and the independent advisory body to the Greek State for the protection and promotion of human rights, presented the Recording Mechanism of Incidents of Informal Forced Returns at a Press Conference held at its premises on Tuesday 24 January at 11.30 am. During the Conference the Recording Mechanism's mode of operation and methodology was presented, as well as a number of findings, recorded in its first Interim Report.
